At Winder-Barrow’s senior night game Friday against Habersham Central, it was a junior who stole the show.
Guard Brittany Witt scored 14 points in the first half, while the Lady Raiders could only muster six as a team, as Witt (21 points overall) led the Lady Doggs to a 55-22 rout in the Region 8-AAAA North matchup.
Of course Winder-Barrow’s team defense deserves a lot of the credit for the win as well.
Habersham was only able to score two points in the first quarter and four in the second. The Lady Raiders added 10 points in the third but were held to just six in the fourth.
While shutting down their opponents, the Lady Doggs also scored consistently to prevent Habersham from getting back in the game.
Senior Mimi Hill added 13 points for Winder-Barrow on the night, while Lindy Cunningham led the Lady Raiders with six.
All three of WBHS seniors found the net at some point, as Rebekah Autry added six points and Lauren Hamel two, in addition to Hill’s 13.
“The seniors have done a great job of setting the tradition, now it’s time for the others to step up and take over,” said Lady Doggs Head Coach Brenda Hill-Gilmore on the seniors leaving soon.
Many of the players who will be stepping into leading roles next season were on display Friday.
Sophomore forward Delorean Itabiyi may have the biggest shoes to fill, those of Hill, who leads the team in scoring with more than 14 points-per-game.
Witt, for one, is prepared to take a leading role.
“”I’m going to be a leader,” she said. “I’m going to help lead my team on.”
Of course the season isn’t over yet, and with the win Friday Winder-Barrow is 4-4 in the North subregion, good for third place.
To keep that spot they will have to defeat county rivals Apalachee on Saturday.
The Lady Cats were not very generous hosts last weekend as they slipped past the Lady Doggs 59-56 at AHS.
Now Winder-Barrow will be at the Dogghouse, prepared to defend not only their home but their spot in the standings.
